Cinema is an art form mainly based on visual images and has the extraordinary ability to bring people together. In fact, watching a film can give the impression to the audience of experiencing the same situations and emotions of the events, which they watch on the screen.

Taking into account this outstanding power, the Italian Embassy in Brazil organizes “8 ½ - Festa del Cinema Italiano”, a festival which will be held from the 31st of August until the 6th of September. During these days, several films will be displayed in various Brazilian cities, including San Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre.

This festival was launched in 2008, and since then, the initiative has grown exponentially. In fact, it continues to attract an increasing number of Brazilian guests every year. In particular, what makes the Italian cinema so appealing is the outstanding sceneries and landscapes, combined with the realistic depiction of every-day life as it actually happens in Italy.

For instance, the range of films proposed in Brazil includes stories of love and fun comedies, but also difficult personal stories and the struggles of the Southern areas, such as Sicily. Therefore, the festival constitutes an incredible opportunity to discover more deeply Italian culture. Moreover, it is another exceptional example of how the field of cultural diplomacy is gaining broader success in bringing people together despite their different countries of origin, religions or heritages.
