Biography

Mr Ivo Petrov, Ambassador to the Republic of Bulgaria has a career spanning nearly forty years. In this time he has had wide experience in diplomacy, recognised with numerous high level positions in diplomatic and governmental positions around the world including the UN, OSCE, representing Bulgaria and Tajikistan and being heavily involved in countless more international organisations. His achievements most notably include the preparation of Bulgaria's participation in the Stability Pact for South-Eastern Europe.

Born 9 March 1948 in Bulgaria Mr. Petrov’s diplomatic career began at a young age, entering into the Bulgarian diplomatic service in 1974 after completing a degree in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering from the Technical University in Sophia. From 1986 until 1990 he worked at the Bulgarian Embassy in Bonn. From 1993 onwards Mr. Petrov was appointed the Bulgarian Ambassador to the United Nations, the OSCE and various other international organisations in Vienna. Returning to Bulgaria in 1998, he spent a year heading the European Integration Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In June 1999 his achievements were recognised by the UN, when Secretary General of the UN Kofi Annan announced that Ambassador Ivo Petrov was invited to take over the position of Special Representative for Tajikistan and Head of the United Nations Mission of Observers in Tajikistan (UNMOT). In 2002 Mr. Petrov returned to Vienna, once again assuming the role of Bulgarian Ambassador to the UN, OSCE and other international organisations. More recently, 2005 saw Ambassador Ivo Petrov assuming the role of Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia.
