On Tuesday 17th of November, 2015 the Philippines and Vietnam both took an important step towards forging closer trade, cultural and security ties, by signing a strategic partnership. Vietnam is now the second strategic partner of the Philippines after Japan.

China has maintained its position and increased its assertive behavior in almost the entire South China Sea area, leading its neighbors to strengthen their relationships. Philippine leader Benigno Aquino and Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang shared their thoughts about the recent developments in the South China Sea or East Sea, affecting trust, peace, security and stability in the region.

According to Mr President Aquino, the pact marks a new era of cooperation between the two nations, mainly in the areas of economic, agricultural, defense and maritime engagement; all of these fields highly concern both of the countries. A copy of the pact was not made available.

The Philippines’ president also hopes that other nations will become willing to join them and support their effort for closer ties at the Hague-based tribunal. Apart from the Philippines and Vietnam, other claimants to the sea include Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan.

Earlier this month, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Hanoi, which marked the first time in 10 years a Chinese premier had made a trip to its southern neighbor, looking towards a better future in the area.

The agreement between the Philippines and Vietnam was signed as the United States announced it was ramping up maritime support to its Southeast Asian allies.
