Review of the Spanish culture: the key role of Spanish institutions in Germany

News from Berlin. Since the Spanish Embassy in Berlin opened it has maintained its diplomatic position; which involves encouraging dialogue between countries, maintaining contact between governments while diffusing and protecting interests of Spain in Germany.

The cultural work abroad is an important cornerstone for international relations. Main objectives for the Cultural Department of the Embassy of Spain in Berlin is to promote art and Spanish culture, support work of employees in the Spanish culture and inform the community of academic, scientific and cultural events related to Spain in Germany. As the Spanish embassy  have deepened their relations with the German-Spanish communities, bilateral trade has also increased.

Examples of the activities undertaken by the Spanish Embassy in Berlin during 2013 include various cultural events such as the Spanish Film Festival Berlin, culinary events, art exhibitions, and concerts.

Alongside their activities in the projection of short films in 2013,feature films and Spanish documentaries are shown on a cyclical basis, there was the second opening of the Spanish Film Festival in Berlin where screenings of feature films, short films and Cinema workshop were held.

In addition, the screening of "Snow White" by Paul Berger received the Goya Award for Best Film of 2013.

Other events have been dedicated to Spanish cuisine, a precious commodity for the Germans and Spaniards abroad. During 2013, the Spanish Embassy hosted many gastronomic events; "Original Flavors: The Mediterranean Essence" was held in the presence of the chef, Fernando Hill who has been awarded a Michelin star. "Taste Spain" allowed assistants opportunities to taste Spanish products such as wine, ham and olive oil. Amongst many other products for this event, tapas were available thanks to the magnificent three star Michelin chef Francis Paniego, winner of National Award from the Royal Academy of Gastronomy. However, one of the most important gastronomic events took place on July 15th. The program included presentations by chefs Ferran Adria, Andoni Luis Aduriz and Joan Roca, a lunch at ‘Dos Palillos’ and a dinner at ‘CINCO’ from Paco Perez at Hotel Das Stue, followed by a tasting menu of ham and cava. This event was attended by journalists who specialise in gastronomy, chefs from all over Germany and a select group of guests to which included the Ambassador of Spain.

Without forgetting the promotion of the art exhibitions by the Embassy, several exhibitions were hosted in 2013. It included "The Color of Optimism", which brought together a select group of the most relevant young Spanish illustrators and "Tours of the Film" which displayed the works of Spanish artists in Berlin with a common theme: Cinematographic creation.

But we cannot forget the wonderful exhibition "BRAVOS - Spanish groundbreaking design" and culinary presentation at the Instituto Cervantes on June 20th. Ambassador Pablo García-Berdoy opened the exhibition, organized by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development and curated by architect and designer Juli Capella. The exhibition included a selection of pieces by young Spanish designers like Patricia Urquiola and Jaime Hayon Martin Azua amongst many others. Moreover, the chef Alberto Fortes offered to the attendees a taste of tapas inspired by the exhibition. It was organized by the Spanish Tourism Office, under the patronage of Ribera del Duero Regulatory Board and Foundation Serrano ham.

The embassy also celebrated the Spanish National Day, held on 14 October. This event was widely attended by representatives of the government, academia, corporate, institutional, and social circles. Exhibitions which show off the talent of Spanish artists were also incorporated into the day’s activities.

Spanish music has been very present in Berlin and throughout Germany thanks to the collaboration with the Spanish Embassy. During 2013, there have been several concerts as the group "Tomatito" in Admiralspalast and even a Spanish pop rock festival on November 29th "Crisis? What Crisis??" at the BOHANNON club in Berlin. The large young audience could enjoy performances of three Spanish bands settled down in the German capital: DREP, The Xumerris and The Moustache. The event organizers, the German developer JAFE, had collaborated with the Embassy of Spain, as well as sponsoring trademarks LIQUOR 43 and Allegretto. The aim was to provide a space for the presentation of musical groups and soloists who want to start in the music scene of Berlin.

The Embassy of Spain in Berlin continues to support the importance of these activities. Their target remains to present the latest cultural events in Spain, accompanied by Spanish artists and agents, and to strengthen values ​​of the rich cultural heritage that Spain possesses.

Repaso a la cultura espaņola: el papel fundamental de las instituciones espaņolas en Alemania

La Embajada Española en Berlín, desde que inició su actividad, ha ido cumpliendo con su papel diplomático, fomentando el diálogo entre países, manteniendo un contacto entre gobiernos mientras difunde y proteje los intereses de España en Alemania.

El trabajo cultural en el extranjero es una importante piedra angular de las relaciones internacionales. De este modo, el Departamento Cultural de la Embajada de España en Berlín tiene como objetivo principal la promoción del arte y de la cultura española, apoyando la labor de trabajadores de la cultura española y la notificación de eventos académicos, científicos y culturales relacionados con España en Alemania. Esto incluye un aumento de los intercambios bilaterales en este ámbito.

Algunos ejemplos de la actividad realizada por parte de la Embajada Española en Berlín durante el 2013 son las diversas actividades culturales organizadas tales como el Festival del Cine Español de Berlín, eventos gastronómicos, exposiciones además de conciertos.

Entre su actividad durante el 2013, como la proyección de diversos cortometrajes, largometrajes y documentales españoles de una manera periódica, cabe destacar la segunda inauguración del Festival de Cine Español de Berlín, en el que se celebraron proyecciones de largometrajes, cortometrajes y un taller de cine. Además,se pudo contar con la proyección de “Blancanieves” de Pablo Berger, Premio Goya a la Mejor Película en 2013.

Otro de los eventos a destacar son los dedicados a la gastronomía española, algo muy preciado por los alemanes y por los españoles que se encuentran en el extranjero. Durante el 2013 la Embajada Española acogió entre otros, los eventos gastronómicos "Original Flavors: The Mediterranean Essence" y también “Saborea España”, en el que se tuvo oportunidad de degustar productos españoles tales como vinos, jamón ibérico y una cata de aceites, entre otros productos como unas extraordinarias tapas gracias al magnífico chef de tres estrellas Michelin Francis Paniego, Premio Nacional de la Real Academia de Gastronomía. Aparte de los mencionados anteriormente, uno de los eventos gastronómicos más importantes del año sucedió el 15 de Julio; el evento incorporó presentaciones de los chefs Ferrán Adriá, Andoni Luis Aduriz y Joan Roca, un menú degustación en el almuerzo en el restaurante Dos Palillos y una cena en el restaurante CINCO de Paco Pérez, en el Hotel Das Stue, precedida de una degustación de jamón y cava. Al evento asistieron periodistas especializados en gastronomía, chefs de toda Alemania y un grupo selecto de invitados que incluyó al Embajador de España.

Sin olvidar la promoción por parte de la embajada de las exposiciones de arte, la embajada ha contado durante el 2013 con diversas exposiciones, entre ellas “El color del optimismo”que reune a un selecto grupo de los más relevantes jóvenes ilustradores españoles o también “Recorridos por el cine”, presentando obras de artistas españoles en Berlín con un tema común, el de la creación cinematográfica.

Pero no podemos olvidar la magnífica exposición “BRAVOS – groundbreaking spanish design” y la presentación gastronómica en el Instituto Cervantes el 20 de Junio. El Embajador Pablo García-Berdoy inauguró la exposición, organizada por la Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional y Desarrollo y comisariada por el arquitecto y diseñador Juli Capella. La muestra incluye una selección de piezas de jóvenes diseñadores españoles de vanguardia como Patricia Urquiola, Martín Azúa o Jaime Hayón ente otros. Por su parte, el chef Alberto Fortes ofreció a los asistentes una degustación de tapas de diseño inspiradas en la exposición y organizada por la Oficina Española de Turismo, con el patrocinio del Consejo Regulador Ribera del Duero y Fundación Jamón Serrano.

La embajada también ha celebrado la Fiesta Nacional Española, que se celebró el 14 de octubre. La embajada recibió una amplia presencia de representantes de la Administración y de los círculos académicos, empresariales, institucionales y sociales.  Además, se incorporó un programa cultural con exposiciones de diferentes artistas españoles.

La música española ha estado muy presente en Berlín gracias entre otros a la colaboración con la Embajada Española. Durante el 2013, se ha podido disfrutar de varios conciertos como el del grupo "Tomatito" en el Admiralspalast e incluso un festival de pop rock español el 29 de noviembre "Crisis ¿¡Qué crisis¡?" en el club berlinés BOHANNON. El numeroso público juvenil pudo disfrutar de las actuaciones de tres bandas españolas afincadas en la capital alemana: DREP, The Xumerris y The Moustache. Los organizadores del evento, la promotora alemana JAFE, contaron con la colaboración de la Embajada de España, así como con el patrocinio de las marcas comerciales LICOR 43 y Allegretto. El objetivo es ofrecer un espacio de presentación a grupos y solistas musicales que desean iniciar un camino en la escena musical de Berlín.

Al considerar la cultura una pieza clave para promocionar en el extranjero, la Embajada de España en Berlín, sigue apoyando la importancia de estas actividades por lo que su objetivo seguirá siendo presentar los últimos eventos culturales de España, acompañados de artistas y agentes españoles para así fortalecer los valores del rico patrimonio cultural que España posee.
