Janša Meets Genocide Prevention Adviser to UN Sec-Gen

Former Prime Minister Janez Janša met Adama Dieng, special adviser of UN secretary general on the prevention of genocide, in Ljubljana on Tuesday in his capacity as the leader of the initiative on the convention on the prevention and punishment of the crime of genocide at the Berlin-based Institute for Cultural Diplomacy (ICD).

A press release from Janša’s Democratic Party (SDS) said that the pair talked about the first meeting of national coordinators of the UN’s Responsibility to Protect initiative, which will take place at Brdo pri Kranju on Wednesday.

They also discussed UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon’s 2013 report on the responsibility of countries to prevent genocide and other mass atrocities.

Janša moreover told Dieng that ICD’s and Slovenia’s joint initiative had received broad support since it was presented at the UN in 2012.

The initiative has been supported by several thousand respectable individuals from all continents, among them many heads of state and leaders of international organisations, as well as leading experts in international law, the SDS said.

Janša also met with the director of the global Responsibility to Protect centre, Simon Adams, ahead of the Responsibility to Protect conference.
