Almost 50 representatives of art academies from all over Europe met in Poznan yesterday as part held of the first "Paradox" conference in Poland.

"Paradox" is a European network of art schools. The network is an initiative of the European League of Art Institutes, which associates with a global network of more than 500 universities from Europe, Asia and America.

Meetings of universities in the "Paradox" network are held every two years and last several days. The first such conference was in 2009 in Palermo but further conferences have since taken place in Cork, Ireland and Granada in Spain.

For three days the artists will discuss the challenges facing contemporary art. This will be the first such large gathering of the artistic world in Eastern Europe. The theme of  the meetings and workshops for young artists will be to find alternative ways and means of expression. These are very important issues that must be discussed because contemporary art is facing many challenges.

During the conference there will be an exhibition organized by the Poznan University of Arts. It presented the work of university professor Magdalena Abakanowicz.

The conference was preceded by a workshop for 35 young artists, 20 of which came to Poznan from abroad. Among the group, selected by an international jury, were students in the last years of their study, this year's graduates, and doctoral students.
